Land at the Edge of the World

Today's featured color is Thulian Rose Pink... and I'll be honest - I didn't expect to find anything tagged that way on Etsy when I did my initial search, but lo and behold, about forty items showed up! It made me wonder where this color got its name, so I did my due diligence and followed up with a little research.

The term Thulian refers to something or someone from the land of Thule - a quasi legendary land described as being located, according to ancient historical writings, at the farthest point north, the land at the edge of world - the land where the sun went to rest. Studies of these references place this land somewhere in Scandinavia - most likely Iceland, Greenland, or the Shetland Islands... very fitting of the earliest descriptions since this is the land of the midnight sun - a region where the sun shines even at night for a good part of the year. The inhabitants of this region are believed to be the predecessors of modern day Inuit and Eskimo peoples.

So why Thulian pink? Well, the color name didn't emerge until the mid-1950's and may actual be a misrepresentation of thulite. Thulite, a form of the gemstone zoisite, often exhibits greyish pink hues, and is found in only one area of the world - the region once referred to as Thule!

Now that you know a bit about the origin of the name of this color, let's take a look at some of the great items that share its beauty! Whether you call the color Thulian pink or Icelandic pink, light mulberry, or even raspberry, there are fun, fresh, and feminine pieces for you to fall in love with...
