It heals all wounds. Occasionally it may seem to stand still. We budget it, try to save it, kill it. Some of us obsess about it, others have no sense of it. It is the great equalizer. It's time - and as much as we wish we it wasn't, awareness of it keeps our world running just a little smoother.

Luckily, there are many wonderful ways to keep track of time and I've found some amazing ones to share with you today. Let's not waste any more time - on with the show!
Without them, our eco system would completely fall into destruction and life as we know it would probably not be possible. They are insects... those creepy crawlies, those things with wings, and the inspiration for my post today!

Before I show you my finds, I thought I'd share a few fun facts about the insect world.

Did you know -

Mayflies have the shortest adult lifespan of all insects - approximately 3-4 hours - because they don't have the ability to eat!

The African mound building termite queen has the longest known insect lifespan at 50 years - although some entymologists believe they may live up to 100 years.

While spiders aren't technically insects - they're arachnids - most people think of them as the scariest creatures in the insect world. Fear of spiders (arachnophobia) is the third most common fear - coming in only behind fear of public speaking and heights.

The largest insect is the Phobaeticus chani or Chan's megastick. One specimen measuring 22.3 inches with the front legs fully extended is on display in London's Natural History Museum.

The heaviest insect is the Little Barrier Island giant weta. One female specimen was found in 2011 weighing 2.5 ounces - that's about the weight of three house mice combined!

The largest flying insect is the Atlas Moth with a wingspan of up to nearly 8 inches.

If you think 8 inches is large for a flying insect, consider this - in prehistoric time, the Permian Dragonfly had a wingspan of approximately 75cm. That's nearly 30 inches! I'd hate to think how big mosquitoes might have been back then!

Luckily, all of my finds today are simply inspired by insects, so rest assured that no insect life was directly harmed simply for the creation of the items. I can't, of course, attest to the fate of the annoying gnat or fly that made its way into any of the artist's or artisan's studio! I can attest that these are all beautiful bits of insect imagery. Enjoy!
My dresser has its share of trinket boxes in a variety of sizes and shapes - some gifts received throughout the years, others chosen by me for a special purpose or because they appealed to something in my spirit. I also have a jewelry armoire to help me keep track of my jewelry and smaller accessories. If I could justify it, I'd probably have a collection of trinket and jewelry boxes for no other reason than because I loved them for this reason or that. I guess there's just something intriguing about opening a little box to explore the treasures hidden away there...

With so many shapes, styles, and themes to choose from, it was hard narrowing down my favorite trinket and jewelry box finds to just a few to share with you here today, but I hope you'll find something you like too!
I love the idea of holding something in my hand (the smaller ones of course) that has been around for millions of years. It's awe inspiring to consider the type of world these creatures were a part of... everything they've lasted through... to be unearthed and turned into a piece of geologic history and modern day artistry!

I wandered the halls of Etsy and searched through my favorites to find these fabulous fossils and fossil inspired items, and I hope you'll enjoy the variety of items and the amazing diversity of styles and display that have brought these ancient pieces of history a place of honor in modern day life!

The world of magic and mystery is a world shrouded in the gossamer veil of the unknown. It's a place of the mind and spirit, unfettered by the trappings of the "normal" world of everyday consciousness. It's a world of ancient knowledge, mystical practices, and the unexplainable... a world where illusion is reality, and the impossible is the probable. It calls upon an ages old energy, reminding us of all that was, that is still, and will ever be.

It appeals to that tiny little part of us, that innocent and accepting child in all of us, that remembers what we were before we became ourselves... and it is, well... magical!

I love the effect that felting produces and I think these beautiful items will easily illustrate why - Enjoy!
Have a blessed Sunday...Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09107220975994355935noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8062041768243580570.post-47890501738993061982012-10-13T13:55:00.000-07:002012-10-13T14:11:00.932-07:00They Sell Seashells...
As I sit here, looking around my office/studio with its coastal theme, there's no doubt that the ocean has a special appeal to me. I've always been fascinated by water and the many types of marine life it holds. In fact, at one point, I considered a career as an oceanographer, inspired by the voyages of the Calypso and the work of Jacques Cousteau as he led expeditions to explore the depths of our planet's oceans. I didn't actually get to see the ocean until I was well into my 30s, and a walk along a beach, picking up shells and exploring tidal pools is still one of my favorite ways to spend a day.

Seashells are one of life's little pleasures, and as my grandchildren can attest to, I have a lot of them. Okay, maybe not quite as many as I once had, thanks to said grandchildren sharing my love of them and almost always leaving with a new piece from my collection to call their own. I love seashells... what can I say? These little bits of calcium (with just the smallest amount of protein thrown in) are beautiful reminders of the artistry of natural life, once having formed the exoskeleton of animals who have perfected a way of creating and enlarging a shelter for themselves through a relatively simple process. Human architects and engineers should be so talented!

The beauty of these shells is not lost on artistic minds... and their use of shells to inspire, adorn and decorate continues to produce beautiful, imaginative, and even functional pieces of art... I invite you to explore these seashell finds!
Lovely, aren't they? I hope you liked them and that you'll take a moment to visit these shops to see all of the wonderful things you can find! I'll be back tomorrow with some felted fashion accessories, so be sure to stop back by. Until then... have a blessed day!

Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09107220975994355935noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8062041768243580570.post-68968813464153640482012-10-12T11:02:00.000-07:002012-10-12T11:02:23.477-07:00Cooling Off PeriodI've been hearing about "first frosts" from a lot of my family and friends over the past week... Brrr... I guess it IS that time of year for most of us though (although, it's pretty rare to get a hard frost here in the Valley of the Sun). Cooler weather means it's time to start anticipating colder weather though - those days when you want to stay warm wrapped up in comfortable (and beautiful!) - accessories like hand knit or crocheted hats, scarves, shawls, earwarmers, legwarmers, mittens, and gloves.

Luckily for you, I know a LOT of knitters and crocheters who would love to have you as a customer! Today, I'm sharing the work of some of my friends and teammates whose lovely work is perfect for keeping you warm on those frosty days - and perfect for upcoming holiday gift giving. Without further ado, enjoy these fabulous accessory finds!

OakliesFashions is a great shop filled with a beautiful assortment of hand knit and crocheted fashion accessories and jewelry. I love this "Winter Skies" Ruffled Scarf, but there are so many other great finds there, it was really hard narrowing it down!

I've known Anne Quinn of HatsByAnne1942 for a few years now thanks to Etsy. A retired teacher, Anne considers herself an "Artist with Yarn". Self taught in the art of crochet, she develops her own patterns and as you can see in this lovely orange hat and scarf set, she's still a very good teacher, even if she is her only pupil now!

You can tell that Christy over at PoppyandPurl likes to have fun with her hand knit hat designs. While she offers a great selection of "regular" accessories, you'll also find some adorable fruit and veggie hats available in both adult and children sizes.

Don't like to wear hats, but hate having your ears get cold? Worn by skiers for years, wide headbands like this Crocheted Sage Headband from MariesCrochetCorner are a great alternative. You'll also find a wide assortment of other crocheted accessories for everyone from newborns to grandparents and everyone in between.

Sometimes even when you're indoors and out of the cold, it's still a bit chilly - especially in those office environments that can be quite drafty. A stylish shawl is the perfect way to hold in some body heat! I came across this Olive Green, Blue, and White Shawl from Yarn Pumpkin - love the colors and the breathability of the weave. Prefer a different color or weave - you'll find a great selection of options at this shop!

I still love to wear mittens in winter weather, so when I ran across this lovely pair of Hand Knit Mittens in Aubergine from designbcb, I knew I wanted to include them in today's post. I think mittens are comfortable and cozy, and yeah, I just like the way they bring out the little kid in me!

How cute are these Santa Inspired Red Fingerless Gloves from SibelDesign? So perfect for keeping your hands and wrists warm and your fingers free to do finer movements, these adorable gloves would be perfect to wear anywhere, and you'd be showing your fun-loving holiday spirit as well!

Legwarmers continue to be a fashionable accessory since they were introduced as a way for dancers and aerobics enthusiasts to keep their legs warm and prevent muscle cramps back in the 80s. These stylish red legwarmers by NATgirona combine knitting with crochet trim for a beautifully warm design.

Have a favorite team, business name, club, or nickname? Now you can have it displayed proudly in a Custom Beanie by fibremom. Wouldn't it be cool to have matching caps for that next family ski trip or that backwoods hike of your nature photography club? Of course you'll find a great variety of other accessories available there too!

Keep your look neat and tidy with a fabulous neckwarmer like this Hand Knit Cranberry Red Chunky Neckwarmer from FoxyGKnits. Stylish, comfortable and easy to put on, these are ideal when you want the warmth of a scarf without the length.

Of course this is just a small sampling of the wonderful variety of handknit and crocheted accessories you can find on Etsy, Artfire, or any of the other handmade marketplaces. Buying handmade is a wonderful way to support small businesses and we all know how important that is these days!

Happy Shopping - and Blessings!
When I was little, we had those tacky costumes with the thin hard plastic masks and the one piece how-do-I-get-into-this-without-ripping it jumpsuits. The other option was typically some burnt cork smudged on your face to give the effects of being a hobo or a football player. I usually opted for some old clothes or fabric scraps out of the storage trunks in the basement - and while they never fit right, they were perfect for creating everything from a pilgrim to a nun to a Japanese geisha girl.

Today's kids (and adults) have a bazillion more options, and I'm happy to share some of my favorite costume finds from Etsy here with you today. Even if you haven't decided on what to dress up your little munchkins (or yourself) as for trick-or-treat night yet, there are still shops that are accepting orders and shipping adorable costumes. Maybe you'll find the perfect costume today! Enjoy!
Chances are good, it'll be an instant hit and definitely the only one in the neighborhood!

TheCostumeCafe is still serving up some adorable Halloween costumes for infants and toddlers too. Your young guy or girl can be a little geeky, a little scary, and a whole lot of unique in one of the costume capes from pipandbean. My favorite is this Deep Sea Angler Fish costume!
We have enough landfills filled with toxins and plastics and all kinds of other yucky stuff - it's always refreshing to me to find shops that take our environment seriously and shoppers who prefer organic over chemical laden, and reusable over disposable.

Today's topic is eco-friendly finds and these are just a few of the great items that fit that category - Enjoy!

My grandchildren love to pretend play and this year we entered the world of felted food. I think I'm probably more hooked on it than they are. I don't think there's a food that I've looked for in a felted or crocheted version that I haven't been able to find somewhere. The more realistic looking, and more adaptable the better - like this cheeseburger/fries/chicken nuggets extravaganza from CreationbyM. Looks good enough to eat!

What to do with all of those small broken crayon pieces? Well, one way to not let them go to waste is to recycle them into bigger crayons like Caroline from LooneyJoonTees does. While she has a variety of shapes to choose from, I like the shape and look of these sweet recycled jumbo crayon hearts.

ImaginationKids offers a shop full of toys made from "sustainably harvested wood, AP Certified non-toxic paint, and ... homemade natural wood polish made from beeswax, jojoba oil, and essential oils." Sounds like a winner for anyone who prefers safe, organic, durable toys for their little ones. I love this bright and colorful rainbow stacker, don't you?

Toys and children's crafts aren't the only things that are ecofriendly, of course. There are some beautiful and functional items that really do their job in helping to balance the strain we put on our eco system. I know quite a few people who swear by such items as these wool dryer balls from CleanSypria. You'll receive a wonderful education on the benefits of using dryer balls in shopowner Tara's product description, so be sure to check them out!

There's something uniquely beautiful about the grain, texture, and imperfection of rough wood... it's earthy, it's one of a kind, and whether it's a storm damaged or fallen tree, there is still magic to be made with it. Robert Goforth of downtoearthwoodworks is one of those artisans who can bring that magic out in the wooden cutting boards he fashions from just such pieces. Whether you prefer a more traditional clean cut board or a one of a kind rough cut board like this one, you'll be sure to love knowing that you've given new purpose to something that might have otherwise become firewood.

I love crocheted face scrubbies - they're wonderful for sensitive skin, environmentally friendly since they can be washed and disinfected over and over again, and when you can buy them in colorful assortments like this set of crocheted cotton yarn scrubbies from RadiantApparel, they are a great deal too! Perfect as an addition to a spa gift basket or as a gift all by themselves, treat yourself or a friend to a set soon!

Nothing goes to waste at PrairieThreads. Shopowner and artisan Laura even uses her fabric scraps to created beautiful coiled fabric bowls like this Galaxy Purple Round Coiled Bowl / Basket. I think it would make a lovely hostess or housewarming gifts - maybe filled with some delicious rolls or muffins from your kitchen!

You can be fashionable and eco-friendly too, as these last two featured items attest to. First up is this fun and fashionable Jersey Tshirt infinity Necklace by Scrapbugs. Perfect for a comfortable touch of color, and a trendy gift option too!

Another reclaimed wood product, this BFF keychain set from StarlightWoods is not only eco-friendly, but your BFF is sure to appreciate the humor (and truth!) behind the message on the wooden charm. Of course, if you prefer a differ message, there are a variety of sayings to choose from. (I have to admit I love the one that's shown in the product photo!)

Of course there are many, many, many more ecofriendly items to choose from, but I hope you'll take a moment to introduce yourself to the awesome shops featured here.

Be sure to stop back by tomorrow when I'll be sharing some of my favorite handmade Halloween decor items from some very talented artists and artisans.

Have a blessed day - and happy shopping!Karenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09107220975994355935noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8062041768243580570.post-33201229681974780972012-10-08T15:46:00.000-07:002012-10-08T15:47:46.607-07:00Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
With the holidays just around the corner, you'll probably be thinking about getting your home ready for all of those holiday guests, holiday feasts, and just having the right ambience to be able to really enjoy your time however you're spending it. Sometimes just a few small changes can update your decor into something amazing.

If you're fortunate enough to have everything exactly the way you like it already, consider a thoughtful home decor gift for your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner host, or perhaps your newly wed children, nieces and nephews, or anyone else who's close to you.

Here are a few of my favorites available on Etsy right now!

Fill in that empty space on that wall with any number of delightful wall decor items:
Yes, I have some very good reasons. No, I'm not posting them here... but if you'd really like to know (and a few of you probably already do know), drop me a contact note and I'll be happy to share the details.

It's good to be back - and it's awesome to be able to say that. It's hard to believe that the holidays are looming so close, and I must admit that I can't wait. It does mean that business is going to get hectic, between promoting and (hopefully, lots of) sales, but it also means I have the opportunity to share some of my new items with you as well as treat you to some amazing finds from a bevy of talented artisans and vintage sellers with a flair for the unique. I'll be bringing back my "6 on Saturday" feature, as well as doing some in-depth interviews with some of the sellers on Etsy as well as other handmade marketplaces.

Gift guide posts were a hit last year, so those will be back as well. I'll be posting a schedule of colors and/or topics I'll be looking for shortly (look for a new tab in the navigation tabs sometime tomorrow) , so if you're a seller and you have something that fits the bill that you'd like me to share with my audience, be sure to let me know!

Fall is well underway, and with it, comes the luscious warmth of orange hues, rusty tones, and brilliant fiery color... so I'd love to share a few of my more autumnal pieces from my Etsy shop, Mystic Wynd. Just click on the photos and you'll be taken directly to the item listing in my shop! Please stop by and check out the rest of the shop too - never too early to start that holiday shopping, now is it?

Blessings!
The owner there, Szarka Carter, offers a lucky blogging buddy of her website a chance to receive some gemstones, and all she asks for in return is a review of the stones or that the recipient create something with the gemstones and then blog about it. Overachiever that I am, I decided to do both!
As I shared in my blog on Saturday, I had received the the stones and was thrilled to find out that she had sent me a strand of amethyst nuggets along with a most beautiful and unusual amethyst druzy slab pendant. Amethyst is one of my favorite stones to work with for many reasons. First and foremost, I guess, is because it's purple - and purple is my favorite color. No surprise there, since purple has long been associated with spirituality, learning and growth, ascension, and imagination.

Amethyst, in addition to being predominantly purple, has played a long and interesting role in mythology, legend, and folklore. Its origin is said to date back to the time of the gods and goddesses in Greco-Roman mythology, formed when the tears of Bacchus, god of the grape harvest and intoxication, fell upon a pure white quartz protective shield that the goddess Diana placed around a young woman who was about to be sacrificed. It was used by the ancient Egyptians as well as medieval warriors as a stone of protection, and it is considered a master healing stone, often worn as jewelry by healers, who draw upon its power to focus healing energy. I personally keep an amethyst point on my nightstand to keep my sleeping area clear of negative energy and to be used during my meditations to help me connect with the infinite consciousness by opening the crown chakra and to help me tap into a deep spiritual understanding of whatever subject I am seeking clarity on.

I wanted to create a piece of jewelry that showed the amethyst off aesthetically, but also showed its strength and protective energy. While playing around with the stones and pendant, reconfiguring them this way and that, I suddenly remembered that I had some some small amethyst donuts that I had been holding on to, waiting for just the right design to use them in. I realized this was the design I had been waiting for. I added some silver accents and created a bib necklace as you can see below, that represents a shield of guidance and protection for the ascending spirits journeying from the realm of the physical to their ethereal bodies during the Age of Aquarius.

Whatever you may choose to attribute to these amethyst stones, one thing is for sure... Mother Nature is a magnificent artist and gives us some pretty amazing gifts from her own private collection to make our world a beautiful place.
Working with these stones was a pleasure. I tend to shy away from buying gemstones without actually seeing and holding them in my hands first, but I know that Szarka sells quality beads at Magpie Gemstones. I'd highly recommend that if you love beads, take some time to visit her website, be sure to sign up for her newsletter (she has some amazing sales on supplies and her own jewelry designs are fabulous!) and stop by her new Etsy shop Magpie Gemstones too!

So, what do you think? Did I do good with my amethyst goodies? If you're interested in purchasing the necklace, please feel free to contact me here, or look for it in my Etsy shop MysticWynd, within the next couple of days!

Blessings,
Well, since I was here last, I have experienced the wonder and blessing of watching my eighth grandchild being born (making me a grandma for the eighth time in as many years!), had a majorly severe sinus infection that knocked me on my butt for a couple of days (guess I really am getting too old for those all nighters at the hospital), and spent the better part of this past week (after making sure I wasn't contagious) watching three of my other grandchildren while my daughter had a chance to recuperate a little bit and also to let mom and dad bond with their newest daughter without trying to spread themselves too thin with their other three kids.

So, first things first, here's a few photos of the newest addition to the family, Khloe Mae, who arrived just a tad early, on June 9 at just a little before six am. She weighed in at 7 lbs 10 oz, and looks mostly like daddy with just enough of mom in her that there's absolutely no question that she's going to be a natural beauty with a heart and spirit to match.
I had devoted an Etsy treasury to our new little bundle of joy earlier this week that you can find here, but I'll repeat the theme of the treasury - which was Wishes for Khloe.

To my newborn granddaughter Khloe, I wish you these--

Angels to surround you and keep you safe,

Peace, love and hope throughout your life,

The beauty of nature to delight you,

Beautiful dreams to aspire to,

Sunshine and blue skies,

A solid path beneath your feet,

Hearts full of love all around you,

Time to be whimsical,

Reasons to celebrate,

Things to make you smile.

Shooting stars to wish on,

Nutritious food to nourish your body,

Curiosity and passions to nourish your mind,

A reason to dance,

And wherever life leads you -- may you always know that you are loved.

It was definitely a week of happy surprises for the family all the way around - in addition to Khloe's arrival, my oldest son landed a new job and they announced that they'll be building a new home which should be finished early in 2013!

Both of the school-aged grandkids are out for the summer, and everyone's up to their eyeballs in family birthday celebrations this month.

I also found out that I (who rarely wins anything, ever... seriously) won some free beads from Magpie Gemstones for being a blogging buddy.
I received these beautiful amethyst nuggets and an amethyst druzy focal component that's got the most amazing striations and crystallization patterns. As soon as I saw it, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it, and in between catching up on my housework this weekend, I'll be working on creating something I hope you'll think is amazing with my bead boon. So be sure to stay tuned for an update on this creation.

So, now you know what I've been up to, how about you? Anything exciting to share?

Blessings,

I have every respect for people who do what they can to educate and assist parents and society in general in how to raise children in safe, healthy, non-abusive surroundings. As the title of this post says - Being a child shouldn't hurt. Rarely does a day go by that I don't read or hear about a child that was neglected or abused, and my heart truly goes out to these often very young and innocent children.

On the flip side, I think we have, as a society, swung the pendulum too far in the opposite direction. Having had three children of my own, and with 7.8 grandchildren (number 8 should be born in a week!) being raised by those children, I get my share of questions on how to get the grandkids to do this or that, or how to deal with a behavioral problem, or simply what to expect when. Occasionally, having given advice, I'll get a "but times have changed, Mom" response, and I cringe because times certainly have changed... and yes, I do blame much of the changes on the liberal and permissive trends of parenting over the past couple decades.

Every child has the right to feel loved and every child has the right to feel safe. But, every child needs to learn that rights and responsibilities go hand in hand. Every child needs to learn respect for their elders (and btw, those elders need to behave in a manner that makes them worthy of that respect.) Every child needs parents who act like parents rather than just friends. Every child needs to develop a sense of ambition that will drive them to achieve the best they can, instead of being rewarded for simply showing up. Every child needs to learn to set their own boundaries and respect the boundaries and feelings of others. True success in life comes from skills like mindfulness, tact, and being a good team player.... and it is the adults of our society who must teach them those skills.

Some children will turn out exceptionally well no matter how they're parented, but others need to learn through experience. Our children need strong adults to teach them to deal with the realities of life. There will be disappointments. There will be others who are better than they are at certain things. They will have to work hard at some point for the things they want in life. Not everyone will like them. Most times there are no do-overs.

In my humble opinion, I think society does its children a disservice that also borders on a form of abuse when we don't teach our children how to cope with life and respect authority. As a result we are raising a generation of children who believe that they're in charge. They shouldn't be reprimanded lest it damage their sensitive egos. They shouldn't be punished for doing something wrong lest the punishment involved damage them physically, mentally, or emotionally. And of course, they should automatically be forgiven, whether or not they are sorry or even understand the repercussions of their actions.

No, being a child shouldn't hurt... but I think we need to take a good hard look at how much our children are being hurt by not learning how to deal with life through appropriate, positive results producing methods. We need to help them understand that the world is complex and that not everyone can be right/the best/(insert your favorite word here) all of the time. We need to find a happy medium between being kind and gentle, and preparing our children for the real world. Children need limits - finding the best way to get them to heed those limits is a very individualized process, since each child has his or her own basic nature to deal with.

It's a shame that many parents seem to have become afraid of their children, having to second-guess their parenting decisions so that they won't live in fear that someone will disagree with their methods and/or misconstrue their intentions taking the situation out of the hands of the parents. Easy answers? There are none, but I believe there needs to be a middle road between abusive and over indulgent parenting. Abuse - no. Healthy limits - definitely.

In honor of today's recognition of International Day of Innocent Children, Victims of Aggression Day, I'm sharing items from some shops that contribute a portion of their profits to child abuse prevention or other children's programs. Please support their wonderful causes if you can!
I was struggling with a lot of issues at the time. I was in a troubled marriage, struggling with religious issues having made a break with the Catholic church just a short time earlier, trying to raise my children with some semblance of sanity, and wondering why I felt so crummy most of the time. On the one hand, I felt like I was emotionally and physically at critical mass, but on the other hand, I felt I was a strong enough person to be able to deal with pretty much anything life threw my way.

I picked up a copy of the Celestine Prophecy and as I read it, something in the author's story resonated with me. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the story, it was written from a first person point of view, telling the story of a young man on a spiritual journey that would take him to Peru, in search of answers to the questions of life. He becomes aware that many experiences he has seem to be the result of synchronicity - seemingly coincidental events interwoven with the journeys of others, bringing them together at just the right time and place to help them all in finding their answers. I remember reflecting on my own situation at the time - thinking how this or that had happened when and where it was supposed to, and as I usually do, trying to figure out what lesson I was meant to learn or to help someone else learn through the experience. (Yep, this IS really how I think!) Needless to say, the book was an easy read for me from a philosophical point of view.

I'm a believer that everything happens for a reason. Not necessarily
that anything is preordained or that there is a supreme being somewhere
"out/up there" who is playing our lives like pawns in a chess game - but
simply that given our purpose of experiencing and re-experiencing
things in this existence, we have roles to play along the way.

Synchronicty by ABArts

In addition to the theory of synchronicity, the books delve into the interconnectedness of the energy that is a part of every particle of matter in the universe. This was the part that made me go "Yeah! THAT'S why I'm feeling the way I'm feeling!" I've known since I was an itsy-bitsy that I was very strongly affected by people and situations. I may not have understood why until I got a bit older and understood what an empath was (thank you to Star Trek TOS for first making me aware of this ability). While I may not have as strong an ability as some, I am typically very aware of a person's physical and emotional state within moments of first coming in contact with them or speaking to them. It can be pretty disconcerting at times - especially if they're doing their best to mask their true feelings! I think, as with most empaths, I also have a tendency to absorb the energies of those around me - especially negative energy since it tends to be more "pronounced" for lack of a better word, and if I'm not careful, I will find myself feeling drained and overwhelmed by those energies.

Have you ever walked into a room and been immediately drawn to a person you may not even know, to soon find out that they have something significant going on in their lives. Or perhaps, out of the blue, you think about an old friend you haven't talked to in years - only to receive a phone call from them seconds later or find an e-mail from them appear in your in-box. For me, those are common occurrences. I find myself very affected by certain places as well - even those that I've only happened upon by chance. I believe it's because I pick up on their energy - and in close proximity, that feeling becomes even more intense. That's why I tend to be a bit of an introvert and homebody - it's easier to deal with a small number of people than the onslaught of crowds when it comes to picking up on energies.

I've begun doing my own daily energy audits - taking a few minutes here and there to just "be" and to let my own energies become clear and cleansed so that I'm ready "to take on the world" again. Does it work? I struggle with it when I've waited too long to do it or I'm really tired, but on the occasions that I can quiet my mind and my spirit, the feeling of balance and well-being can be amazing.

Do you have something that helps you renew your energy and your spirit? Yoga? Tai Chi? Prayer? Meditation? I'd love it if you'd share it with us here.

I hope you've had a wonderful weekend and that the coming week is filled with balance and well being for you. I'm off to track down the other books in this series that I haven't read yet!
Blessings,

There have been so many times I've seen people in a situation where their inner flame of passion for life has been quelled by an inability to overcome the obstacles that keep them from attaining all that they could.

For some, myself included, fear is one barrier - whether it's emotional fear of being put down by others, physical fear that there will be some type of physical pain or loss involved, fear of the unknown, or even the fear of not knowing how to deal with success.

Other obstacles can be just as immobilizing - finances, time, illness, overburdening commitments, lack of support... and as a result, we "consent to creep" along in our daily lives, simply getting by when, in our heart of hearts, we want to soar.

I hope if you're one of the "creepers", that you'll think a little bit about what's holding you back and at least consider making some small changes to help prepare the way for the day when you will soar!

Here are some lovelies to inspire you :)

Be yourself.

Above all, let who you are, what you are, what you believe,

shine through every sentence you write, every piece you finish.

~ John Jakes

Struggling a bit lately with the whole idea of being "true to myself", and trying to figure whether I'm doing things because they're a good fit for me or because they work for others, I realized that I've become a bit of a stranger to myself.

In my younger years, the driving force in my live was a connection that I felt with the more spiritual (which I learned later was not to be mistaken for religious), transcendental side of myself. I was one of those people who felt a sense of awe in the simple things in life that many people simply don't notice, and that others take for granted... a sunrise over the mountains, the innocence of a newborn baby, the delicious genuine joy in a child's laughter, the wonder at the size of the universe as I looked up at a night sky full of twinkling stars. I felt I was, in the words of Max Ehrmann, author of the Desiderata, "a child of the universe".
by PrimalPainter

Life was about feeling, experiencing, and learning - and sharing it if I was fortunate enough to know a like minded person who could understand. Sometimes that part was hard, because I am one of those people who is very sensitive to the energies of others, sometimes being even more aware of them than the person themselves. Ultimately, it left me with a lot of things I wanted to share, but very few people to share them with...and over the years, I dealt with that by keeping to myself or by trying to "fit in" to everyone else's way of thinking of what I should be.

This year, I've gone through a lot of soul searching - examining, re-experiencing, and coming to terms with my past with the help of a wonderful psychologist - and I've come to acknowledge that I've let too many things get in the way of letting myself just be me. There were painful questions and secrets that I've finally learned the truth about, bringing a significant, if not entirely complete, sense of closure to issues that I never felt strong enough or worthy enough to tackle. I also realized that I wanted to rediscover the "old" me... the sensitive, spiritual, inquisitive "me" who doesn't have to hide behind the many masks I've worn to protect myself from others.

The journey back to being that woman will be an interesting one...I've flirted with her a lot along the years, but now I'll be embracing her essence completely. I'm sure there will be a lot of missteps and mistakes along the way, and I know there will be many people who will think me foolish at many times. I also know it will be worth it.

I wanted to let you know, since you'll be seeing a bit of a paradigm shift in the way I write, the things I share, the places I bring you to along the way. I hope to find many new friends, and grow closer to the few friends I've made through this blog and on Etsy over the past few years.

I've always loved words and the thoughts that others share - especially since they can so easily put into words the ideas that I struggle to get across. So, I'd like to end this post by sharing something written by Virginia Satir, a renowned American educator and psychologist - it says what I feel much better than I ever could!

“I am Me. In all the world, there is no one else exactly like me. Everything that comes out of me is authentically mine, because I alone chose it -- I own everything about me: my body, my feelings, my mouth, my voice, all my actions, whether they be to others or myself.

I own my fantasies, my dreams, my hopes, my fears. I own my triumphs and successes, all my failures and mistakes. Because I own all of me, I can become intimately acquainted with me. By so doing, I can love me and be friendly with all my parts. I know there are aspects about myself that puzzle me, and other aspects that I do not know -- but as long as I am friendly and loving to myself, I can courageously and hopefully look for solutions to the puzzles and ways to find out more about me.

However I look and sound, whatever I say and do, and whatever I think and feel at a given moment in time is authentically me. If later some parts of how I looked, sounded, thought, and felt turn out to be unfitting, I can discard that which is unfitting, keep the rest, and invent something new for that which I discarded. I can see, hear, feel, think, say, and do. I have the tools to survive, to be close to others, to be productive, and to make sense and order out of the world of people and things outside of me.

I own me, and therefore, I can engineer me. I am me, and I am Okay.”

If this is your first visit here, I hope you'll take some time to get to know me and that you enjoy the things I share with you here. If you've been here before, I hope you'll keep coming back. I hope to make it an enjoyable experience!

Blessings,

These are all really super simple to make - definitely a fun way to spend a summer afternoon with the kiddos... in fact, I'm think I just may put these on my to-do list next month while I babysitting my daughter's kids for awhile after their new little baby sister arrives!

I'll take them in order of simplicity, beginning with the "bacon and eggs", then on to the "hot dog", and ending with the hamburger!

Candy Eggs and Bacon

What you'll need:

pretzel sticks

Almond Bark, white candy melts, or white chocolate chips

Yellow M&Ms (I prefer to use the mini m&ms, especially if you want to make two eggs instead of one!)

Cookie sheet

Parchment paper or waxed paper

Directions:

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or waxed paper. Pick through the M&Ms bag to make sure you have all of the yellow M&Ms separated out. Over a double boiler, or in the microwave, melt your white candy until it's pourable. If you're microwaving, you'll want to stop every 15 secs after the first minute to stir the candy and make sure it's not overdone - it will get grainy and useless if you over microwave it, so use caution.

Once your white candy is melted, pour about a teaspoon onto your prepared and lined cookie sheet. Immediately arrange 1 or 2 M&Ms on top to form the egg "yolks" and two pretzel sticks as the "bacon."

Allow the candy to harden at room temperature, or if you'd like to speed up the process, you can place the cookie sheet in the fridge or freezer so the candy will cool at a faster rate.

Candy Hot Dog

What you'll need:

1 bag of Circus Peanuts (candies)

1 bag of Kraft Caramels

Yellow frosting (or Red if you're from Chicago where ketchup is cool on hot dogs)

Green gumdrops ( diced finely for "relish")

Directions:

Slice each Circus Peanut open from the center top not quite all the way through the bottom to created the "bun"

Warm a caramel in your hands or in the microwave for just a few seconds and form it into a hot dog shaped cylinder

Place the "Hot Dog" inside the "bun" and add a zig zag of "Mustard" (yellow icing) or "Ketchup" (red icing), a sprinkling of gumdrop relish - and these are ready to eat!

Cookie Burgers

What you'll need:

Vanilla Wafers

Chocolate covered mint cookies (Most people use Keebler Grasshoppers, but I always try to keep some Girl Scout Thin Mints in the freezer for just such an occasion!)

Coconut

Green Food Coloring

Red Frosting

Yellow Frosting

Orange Frosting (if you're going to make cheeseburgers)

Green Gumdrops (sliced very thin)

Honey

Sesame Seeds

Directions:

(These are not "properly built" burgers (my apologies to my hubby who would rebuild a real burger if I served it to him like this!) but to keep them from falling apart, I find this assembly works best!)

Prepare the "lettuce" by putting coconut in a small baggie or shaker container along with a few drops of green food coloring.

Put a dollop of red frosting (ketchup) on the flat side of a vanilla wafer, add a chocolate covered mint cookie, then a dollop of orange frosting cheese, a few slices of green gumdrop "pickles", some coconut "lettuce", yellow frosting (mustard), and another vanilla wafer. Brush the top vanilla wafer "bun" with a little bit of honey, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and voila! Smiles all around when your little ones see these sweet treats!

Hope your week is off to a wonderful start!
You are greatly appreciated!

Many people, however, no longer have "Mom" in their world anymore, and I thought that sharing this particular video tutorial would be an inspiration for those people who wish they could send Mother's day thoughts to Mom in heaven on the wings of love.

The project I'm sharing today comes to us as a share from YouTube - and it's a great step-by-step guide to creating a sweet winged heart based on an original design by origami master Francis Ow. Enjoy!
