Delightful Discoveries - The Bear Necessities 09.24.10

Let's be teddy bears in our next lifetime. Everybody loves them, nobody cares if they're fat, and the older they get, the more they're worth. ~unknown

Today's post is about teddy bears - those delightful, fluffy, cuddly critters that should be a required item in every childhood. Growing up, cartoons and childrens' shows featured lots of bears - the Dancing Bear on The Captain Kangaroo Show, Yogi and Boo-Boo on Yogi the Bear cartoons, and the antics of a boy and his real-life teddy bear named Gentle Ben. I actually didn't receive my first teddy bear until I was 13 (which may explain a few things) - a Valentine's Day gift from the first young man I would ever fall in love with... and that bear would be my companion and confidante for nearly a decade through all of my adventures and tribulations. Just a couple years after I received my first bear, another teddy bear favorite of mine in the form of a song - Biff, the Friendly Purple Bear - would be released on Mac Davis' album All the Love in the World. That song would lead to my making sure that all of my children had their own teddy bear companions when they were born... and the teddy bear theme followed into the next generation as well with Pooh Bear and friends figuring into the nursery decor for two of my grandsons!

Repeating an idea from earlier in the week that was well received, I'm going to share some of my favorite collected quotes and thoughts about teddy bears and the magic they share with the world as I showcase the wonderful (and in some cases, very unique) bears that you all shared with me. Enjoy!

As long as there is a need for companionship, security, and unconditional love, there will be a need for teddy bears. They are probably the one toy that is known all around the world as a symbol of safety and comfort, appealing to everyone regardless of gender or age... and forever a companion of the heart, no matter how old or worn the bear or its owner are.

I hope you've enjoyed this look at teddy bears, and that you'll come back tomorrow for my final installment in this week long look at toys, collectibles, and games when I take a little more grown-up look at games with a showcase of items relates to games of chance. I'd love to see any of your items that relate to this theme - including dice, casino related items, playing cards, and such.
