Over the River and Through the Woods

I'm guessing that most of you have heard the Thanksgiving song "Over the River and Through the Woods", but did you know that it was originally published as a poem under the title, "A Boy's Thanksgiving Day"? Kind of odd since it was written by Lydia Maria Child about her childhood memories of visiting her grandparents on Thanksgiving day! Here's the poem in its entirety...

Over the river, and through the wood,
To Grandfather's house we go;
The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh
through the white and drifted snow.

Over the river, and through the wood—
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes and bites the nose
As over the ground we go.

Over the river, and through the wood,
To have a first-rate play.
Hear the bells ring, "Ting-a-ling-ding",
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!

Over the river, and through the wood
Trot fast, my dapple-gray!
Spring over the ground like a hunting-hound,
For this is Thanksgiving Day.

Over the river, and through the wood—
And straight through the barnyard gate,
We seem to go extremely slow,
It is so hard to wait!

Over the river, and through the wood—
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun! Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

Thanksgiving Day here in the United States means family, friends, fun and of course, FOOD... way too much food in most cases, but hey, it only comes once a year! Whether you're serving the holiday meal or joining friends or family at their homes, it's always nice to have some special Thanksgiving decor items to decorate your table and home with... or to give as hostess gifts when you're a guest.

Here are just a few of my favorite Thanksgiving home decor and gifting ideas - all available on Etsy!

It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without your favorite pie - keep yours at the ready in this lovely PUMPKIN PIE-PLATE COVER DISH from whitedovecrafts

When I decorate for any holiday I love to include decorations that are unique and show off a humorous or whimsical side to life. That's one reason I think this Personalized Ceramic Thanksgiving Turkey Accent Lamp Decoration from Ragdoll722 is just adorable!

If you're going to spend Thanksgiving at the home of a family member or friend, don't forget to remember your host and/or hostess with a little thank you gift. This Thank you for Thanksgiving Gift Set with Pumpkin Spice soap and wooden dish from sacredsuds is both a practical and lovely thank you gift.

Whatever your holiday plans are, remember to give thanks for all of the wonderful things in your life on this day of thanksgiving! Happy Saturday!
