Delightful Discoveries - Melon Madness 08.03.10

I'm dragging a bit today, so sorry this is late! I'm one of those lucky people who has RLS (restless leg syndrome) and while it usually is under control, last night was not one of those nights! Waiting patiently for the hubby to make some coffee so I can wake up! Coffee connoisseur that he is, it's just safer for me to let him make it...lol.

But I digress, let's get back to some Melon Madness! Today is National Watermelon Day, so I thought I'd share a few fun factoids about this fabulous fruit! Did you know:

  • Early explorers used watermelons as canteens?
  • Why do they call it watermelon? Because it's 92% water!
  • Watermelon contains no cholesterol or fat and is an excellent source of vitamins A, B6 and C, as well as containing both fiber and potassium.
  • The record for the world's largest watermelon belongs to Lloyd Bright of Hope, Arkansas. and weighed in at 268.8 lbs!
  • All parts of a watermelon are edible, including the seeds and rinds.
  • The word "watermelon" first appeared in the English dictionary in 1615.
  • Not all watermelons have red flesh - there are some varieties that have yellow or orange flesh as well.
  • Watermelon has been harvested for over 5000 years!

Now that you know a little bit more about this delicious, refreshing, and healthy fruit, let's take a look at some of the great handcrafted items inspired by the watermelon!
