What's Your Sign?

It's Etsybloggers Blog Carnival post time again for me. One of the themes for April (in honor of one of the team founder's birthdays on 4/23 - making her a Taurus) is: Tell us your birthday and what astrological sign you are. Do you ever read/follow your horoscope?

My birthday is October 23rd which puts me on the Libra/Scorpio cusp since the sun usually moves from Libra to Scorpio on that day each year. For years, I actually thought I was a Libra until I had my horoscope done by a professional astrologer at a New Age type fair I had gone to with my mom when I was a teenager. This of course was back in the early 70's when astrology was all the rage, everyone read their daily horoscopes in the paper and one of the most common pick-up lines was "What's YOUR sign?"

I came to find out that I had been born about two hours after the signs had changed on the day of my birth and I was actually a Scorpio - that explained a lot! Of course, your sun sign is only one aspect of your astrological profile. As for whether or not it's all hooey... well, my thought is that everything that exists has some effect on everything else, so I'm open to the idea that there just may be something to the planetary influences. After all, the moon has an effect on the tides, and solar flares from the sun can definitely do some wacky things here on Earth - who's to say that all of the planets positions don't have their effects? Ask any police officer how busy they are on the night of a full moon!


For the record, my sun is in Scorpio - which means that I, like most Scorpios, are the epitome of the saying that "still waters run deep." We tend to be quiet, yet our feelings are very intense and when we're challenged or hurt, we can be unforgiving. We tend to be loyal to a fault, yet suspicious and inquisitive. We like to know what makes other tick, yet we tend to keep our own thoughts and feelings protected from others. We are passionate about the things that are important to us.

My rising sign or ascendant (how others see me) is in Taurus. If you ask Al, he will definitely agree that this is how I come across! Outwardly calm (because I tend to internalize my stress), somewhat stubborn, practical and persistent (Al said that's an understatement, but I'm really NOT) - that's the Taurean Ascendant. On the negative side, it can be hard to get me motivated if I don't see the use in doing something - although once I get started, it's hard to stop me until the job is complete. (Can anyone say workaholic?)

Our emotional sides are believed to be governed by the moon in astrology. My moon is in Pisces, meaning that my emotions tend to be very strong, and I can easily be overwhelmed by negative emotions and energies. I tend to take things to heart, and I also have a soft spot that allows me to be very empathetic towards others. Intuition is a strong point with me - now if I'd only learn to actually listen to those gut instincts!

These three aspects of your natal (birth) chart are the ones that most people are interested in because they tend to be the most obvious as far as our personalities go... but for a really good horoscope charting or to be able to do "predictions" with the information, you really need to have information on all of the planets. I wouldn't run my life by a horoscope prediction, but I think the whole study of astrology can be entertaining!
