I have to include this somewhat "harsh" but perhaps true satire by the late George Carlin -
o'er insecticide waves of grain,
and strip-mined mountain's majesty,
above the asphalt plain!
America, America,
man sheds his waste on thee!
And hides the pines, with billboard signs,
from sea to oily sea!"
In my very humble opinion, while people argue on both sides of the fence regarding such things as global warming, saving the forests, use of fossil fuels, and so on - I think that the key to assuring that we can live comfortably and safely for generations to come is balance. And again, IMHO, balance is something our planet sorely lacks.
Symbiosis (which is derived from the Greek: σύν syn "with"; and βίωσις biosis "living") is a term I like to use in describing the relationship between man and his environment. In symbiosis, at least one member of the pair benefits from the relationship. The other member may be injured (= parasitism), relatively unaffected ( = commensalism), or may also benefit ( = mutualism). Ideally, I think a mutually benefitting relationship with our planet should be our goal. How? Well, I think we need to realize that our planet's tangible resources are finite and we need to find alternatives to them or at the very least become more efficient in our use of them. We should recycle, reuse, repurpose and most of all, be sure that what we are doing is not going to have a serious detrimental affect on our environment. (thanks to Anicka's Cottage for the scarf listing!) I am appalled when I read articles about the waste that we have dumped into our oceans, the pollutants we pump into our air, the chemicals that fill our landfills. We can't claim ignorance or naivete anymore because we have the ability to monitor our actions, and I think we need to start doing it on a serious level. Okay, I said I'd keep it relatively short... so, with that -
These wonderful Etsy shops have given me the privilege of promoting some of their incredible and creative Earth Day related items and special offers.
