Crocheted Sunflower Brooch

365 Days of Creativity - Day 6 - Crocheted Sunflower Brooch

I love sunflowers, always have, always will.  I can remember planting sunflower seeds along the back fence every spring, and waiting and watching as the stalks climbed up to the clouds (or so it seemed to a young girl of 5 or 6). Then magically, overnight it seemed, the huge blossoms opened, their halo of bright yellow petals against an azure sky... and when the flowers faded, we would pick the seeds - some for soaking in brine and drying, others for the next year's planting.  It was a rite of passage for me, I guess, but every time I see a sunflower I think back to those blissfully simple summer days.  It's no surprise then, that I've had my share of sunflower themed items in both my home decor and as both fashion prints and accessories over the years.  Today I thought I'd share a pattern for a sunflower brooch that I'm sure you'll agree will make a lovely addition to your summer suit, or to dress up a straw purse or hat!

Things you'll need:

  • Worsted weight yarn in brown (Color A), mustard (Color B), yellow (Color C), and green (Color D) (You'll have enough to make a few with a skein of each, but if you have small quantities of leftovers from other projects, all the better!!)
  • Size H crochet hook
  • Invisible Thread
  • Stitch Marker (or a piece of yarn to mark the beginning of a round)
  • Sewing Needle
Directions:

Row 1) Using Color A, chain 2, join. 6 sc in center of chain, do not join - work in rounds  using stitch marker to mark the last stitch of the round.

Row 2) 2 sc in each sc (12sc)

Row 3) *2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, repeat from * around (18 sc)

Row 4) *2 sc in first sc, sc in next 2sc, repeat from * around (24 sc)

Row 5) Sc in next 2 sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3sc, repeat from * around, ending with 1sc (30sc)

Row 6) Sc in first sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4sc, repeat from * around, ending with 3 sc (36 sc)

Join with a slip stitch into first stitch of round and finish off..

Row 7) Using Color B, with slip stitch, join in any stitch, hdc in same sc and hdc around (36 hdc)
Join with slip stitch in top of first hdc of round and finish off.

Row 8) Using Color C and working in front loops only, join with slip stitch, skip next hdc,* in next stitch [hdc, dc, tr, chain 2, sl st in back rib of first chain made, tr, dc, hdc] (first petal made), skip next stitch, sl st in next, repeat from * around (you should have 9 petals) sl st in same as joining sl st.

Row 9) In back loops, sl st in first 2 stitches behind petal ( the 2nd sl st should be directly behind the petal stitch) , skip next stitch, in next stitch (which should be directly behind your sl sts in previous row)* [ hdc, dc, tr, chain 3, sl st in back rib of first chain made, tr, dc, hdc] (back petal made), skip next stitch, repeat from * around ( 9 petals ); sl st in same st as beginning sl st. Finish off.

Leaves (optional) Make 2

Row 1) Using color D, ch 9, dc in 3rd chain from hook, dc in next ch, hdc in next 3ch, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of chain, sc, hdc in next 3ch, dc in next 3ch, Ch 3, turn.

Row 2)  2 dc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next 3 st, sc in next 4 st, ch 3, sl st in back rib of first ch of row 1, sc in same st as last sc, sc in next 3 st, hdc in next 3 st, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in last st. Finish off.

Thread needle with invisible thread, attach leaves to flower so that about 3/4 -1" of the leaf tip shows. Attach pin back to back of flower.  Pin to blouse, jacket, hat, purse or anywhere you'd love a splash of summery sunflower color!

xo,

Hi, thanks for he lovely pattern. I'm having problems on round 8. So by the end of round 7 I've got 36 sc. Basically each petal takes up 3 SC from precious round (sl st, petal, skipped stitch), is this correct? I'm left over 8/9 SC from previous round when I've finished my ninth petal.
Confused :(

I wish you showed a picture of the finished leaves. I've made them 3 times now & they turn out looking strange. I have trouble understanding your instruction for rown 2 where you say to slip stitch in back rib of first ch of row 1 & then sc in the last sc? are you talking about the last SC of the 3 SC in the last ch?
